Housebreaking a Yorkie is not the easiest thing to do and you’ll know this when you have your own little yorkie with you. In fact, training a yorkie to stop peeing inside the house is the most common concern that owners around the world have to deal with. If you’re just getting started though, don’t fret because housebreaking your yorkie is not an impossible task.
It Is Possible! – Housebreaking a Yorkie
While you will have to be realistic and understand that you have some rough spots ahead of you, keep in mind that housebreaking a yorkie can be done. And in the course of housebreaking your new friend, remember that it’s not personal. Your yorkie will not poop or pee inside the house just to annoy you. It will feel like you’re in a perennial practical joke but you’re not. Here are some things you have to keep in mind when housebreaking yorkies:
Always be consistent with your potty schedule. Much like how your body gets used to your day-to-day schedule, the same goes as well for your yorkie. Come up with a schedule and then make sure that you stay with it.
Work On a Schedule – Housebreaking a Yorkie
It’s typical for a yorkie, or pretty much any dog, to want to go outside as soon as it wakes up. If you don’t share the same sleeping schedule with your yorkie, this can be a bit problematic. To make sure that your little one doesn’t wake up in the middle of the night, do take your yorkie out for some potty time before going to bed.
When it’s potty time and your yorkie properly poops and pees, give it a treat and praise its efforts. Let it know that doing its business outside is the right way to go.
Conversely, when you see your little friend taking up a position as if it is getting ready to relieve itself, tell it firmly no and then immediately take your yorkie outside.
Crate Training – Housebreaking a Yorkie
If scheduling and being firm doesn’t work, consider using crate training in housebreaking a yorkie. The idea is that dogs are very sensitive about where they sleep. Place them in a crate or cage that is just big enough for a bed and they won’t poop or pee inside. This lets you control then when is potty time so you don’t have to worry about accidents. Since they won’t poop or pee where they sleep, they have no choice but to poop and pee only when you take them out.
However, do be sensitive when using crate training in housebreaking a yorkie. In as much as your yorkie won’t mess up where he sleeps, you should also make sure that you leave your puppy in the crate for no more than eight hours.
